Excursion to Spinalonga

Spinalonga, a small fortified island at the entry of the natural port of Elounda, is a historic and monumental palimpsest preserving important architectural elements from Venetian and Ottoman periods. It belongs to the monuments that during the 20th century were used as places of confinement.The island was constantly inhabited since the end of the 16th century to the middle of the 20th century, acquiring different identities.Today, it is located in a highly developed touristic area. It has become one of the most important archaeological sites of Crete, candidate of inscription in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List.
